Salut Jerusalem

Director: Henry Chapier

Music: Vangelis Papathanasiou

Year of release: 1972

The documentary “Salut Jerusalem” is also called “Hello Jerusalem”. It is more like an impression with images, rather than a movie or documentary. The film starts with a preamble to Joseph Kessel who wrote “Les Fils De L'Impossible”, a book with interviews and biographical sketches of death camp refugees in Israel in 1970. Then, the film shows an evocation of Genesis with an overflight of the Sinai Mount, the burning bush, silhouettes of the patriarchs and Apostles. The watcher then falls in the decoration of Judaea: as at the time of the Prophets, pilgrims go up towards Jerusalem, on the step of the Zealoies, the Stiffs or the Apostles, to forget all the quarrels of race, nation or religion. They are twelve different characters, priests, hippies or anarchists in the search of peace. They symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel, or the twelve Apostles. The discovery of Israel begins with the Day of Atonement, where the life of the country stops: the adults are in the synagogues, the deserted streets are abandoned with the plays of children. After the evocation of the ritual of the Jewish festivals, the film goes back to Judaea of the Bible. With the variation of the technology of the 20th century, Arabs andBedouins respect their thousand-year-old traditions; it will be the second stage of our pilgrims: Jericho. Given up in a tragic way so much of time during centuries, the city is a symbol of hope erasing the memory of all the exoduses. The tour continues to Jerusalem where one arrives for the communion of the boys, antiquated ceremonial. The pilgrimage begins again towards the Monastery of Saint-Sava, in the desert, where always the rage of the Prophets resounds. It is also the discovery of Neveh-Shalom, future community of three religions where one builds the city where Juifs, Chrétiens and Moslem will live together. Scene of meal of the Apostles and arrival at the edge of the Jordan, where Blacks receive the new Baptism. The film finishes with a vision of Jerusalem Céleste, ground where the hope of a new life is still possible.

Also known as “Love”. A young architect, Alquié, is sent by the French government to study a solution to save Venice. The city sinks into the ground. Alquiés collaborator, an Italian photographer, estimates that the French doesn’t know sufficiently the heart of the city and his inhabitants to rule of the citys fate. Alquié runs into Marina. (Sonia Petrova)  Marina,  enigmatic like the city, attends the two men until the day whenher mother decides to marry with a richissime compatriot, more interested by the nobility of her ancestors than by his personal value. Understanding that the Venetian ones prefer to sclerose and preserve their out of date traditions, Alquié, leaves Marina and Venice. The music and the movie are never released in any format.
